Female genital mutilation in asylum procedures: Case law, protection and advice, 2025

Editor: Claire Deery
Female genital mutilation (FGM; also known as cutting, FGM/C or FGM_C) is not only a serious human rights violation, but also a recurring topic in the context of asylum procedures. Girls and women flee the threat of FGM or seek protection from the psychological and physical consequences of FGM that has already been carried out. This text explains the legal situation of FGM in asylum procedures, the special protection needs of those affected and the need for reliable information for counseling centers.
