As an association of experts from various fields, the Berlin Coordination Office against FGM_C advocates for the right to bodily integrity through prevention, advice and health care. The concrete goals of the Berlin Coordination Office against FGM_C are

  • Holistic, culturally sensitive care for women and girls
  • Prevention and de-tabooing of FGM_C in communities with a high prevalence
  • Strengthening technical expertise by raising awareness and training specialists
  • Raising public awareness
  • Cross-organizational cooperation and networking to provide the best possible care and protection for affected women and girls

The interdisciplinary orientation of the coordination center reflects the diverse needs of those affected and communities in the context of female genital mutilation. Thanks to its interdisciplinary approach, low-threshold nature and orientation as a central point of contact, the coordination centre can facilitate access to interdisciplinary and cross-organizational services and refer those seeking help at a low threshold if necessary.

In order to achieve the aforementioned goals and act as a central point of contact for all questions relating to FGM_C, the Berlin Coordination Office against FGM_C covers key aspects of care for women and the prevention of FGM_C in the communities, provides referrals where necessary, trains professionals, raises public awareness and creates synergies with other institutions through networking. The coordination office acts as an interface and ensures low-threshold access as well as a coordinated range of services, which are continuously developed in line with demand. The Berlin Coordination Office against FGM_C covers the following services under one roof:

 

  • Gynecological care and expert opinions in the context of asylum procedures
  • Psychological Advice
  • Open women’s group / Advice
  • Community work by experts from countries with high prevalence
  • Further training for specialists, information and specialist events
  • Provision of flyers, information on website and social media
  • Exchange, cooperation and referrals: network meetings, opportunities for exchange with other institutions, target group-specific referrals
